MARK ORR FELLOWS
MARK ORR FELLOWS
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Students from local colleges and universities are selected for membership by the institutions themselves. Selected students are contacted prior to our first meeting of the fall, typically scheduled in mid to late September. At this meeting (or whichever meeting the student first attends), the student member will be recognized and asked to say a word or two about their interest in international matters.
To satisfy the requirements of this Fellowship, the student will be obliged to attend two of our nine meetings held during the year (monthly from September through May).
Our typical meetings (at the University Club in downtown Tampa) are “members only” with 50-70 attendees providing intimate Q&A opportunities with the speaker. Student Committee dues are paid by the Fellowship program, which was founded and originally funded by Dr. Mark Orr at USF. Today the Fellowship program is funded by Member donations. The cost for meals is $30; due to space limitations, advance reservations are required.
THE TERRELL SESSUMS
YOUNG LEADERS INITIATIVE
WASHINGTON, D.C.
The annual American Committees on Foreign Relations (ACFR) Young Leaders Initiative (YLI) event is held each May or June in Washington, DC. https://acfr.org/young-leaders-initiative/ ACFR welcomes a group of 15 to 20 Young Leaders from Committees around the country, to engage in small group briefings and active exchanges with U.S. government officers, think tank scholars, and other international affairs professionals.
Our Committee sends one or two of you to this program, known locally as the Terrell Sessums YLI, and anonymously funded by the generosity of one CFR Member in honor of Mr. Sessums .
This application requires: i) a resume, and ii) 200-300 word answers to each of the questions below. From those responses, up to three of the respondents will be invited before a panel of Committee Members. The panel will choose one or two student member(s) for this honor.
The YLI is looking for undergraduate or graduate level students who demonstrate high academic achievement, potential career interest in international affairs, and strong leadership qualities. Attendance at the monthly CFR meetings in Tampa will be a significant factor in the selection process. Upon completion of the workshop in DC, our successful candidate(s) will be expected to prepare a written report on his/her or their experience for sharing with the Committee.
1. What are your specific plans upon completion of your education?
2. How would participation in YLI further those plans?
3. Is there anything in your background or upbringing which would make YLI particularly helpful to you in achieving your goals? For example, one candidate may be the first college graduate in their family and never been to DC. So YLI would be an incredible jump start to achieving his or her goals. Another candidate may have substantial international experience and would be a superb representative of the Committee at YLI. There is no correct answer to this question; the panel does not have a specific profile in mind.
